The Highest Calorie Restaurant Meals in America

America has a reputation for excessive meal sizes. Which is a major culprit of the obesity epidemic. But none are as fatty, high calorie, salt-laden and sugar-loaded as the dishes presented in this years Xtreme Eating Awards List.

The Xtreme Eating Awards List is compiled annually by the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest. It names the restaurants with the most dangerously high-calorie meals in the country. Which they warn are a woeful indication of Americans’ eating habits. Huge portions for the lowest price.

This year’s list includes:

IHOP’s 2,000-calorie breakfast. Which includes a meat-topped omelet, hash browns, tomatoes, onions, cheese and a side of syrup-soaked pancakes.

Texas Roadhouse’s steak dinner, that includes a side of 1,000-calorie marshmallow-and-caramel-loaded sweet potato, a creamy and cheesy salad, plus all-you-can eat peanuts, rolls, and butter.

The Cheesecake Factory’s pasta Napoletana clocks in at 2,310 calories. That includes piles of sausages, pepperoni, meatballs, bacon, butter and heavy cream.

Factory for the Flying Gorilla, who serves a chocolate banana liqueur milkshake which totals 950 calories. It is the equivalent of the number of calories found in a Budweiser with five scoops of ice cream.

Chili’s The Ultimate Smokehouse Combo, which is served on a tray because it can’t fit on a plate. Patrons are invited to choose any three types of meat, from cheddar smoked sausage to baby back ribs.

Buffalo Wild Wings, serves a 1,950-calorie cheese curd bacon burger with fries. That happens to be the equivalent of five bacon double cheeseburgers from Burger King.

Dave & Buster’s 12-inch quesadilla, that looks like a pizza. Stuffed with two types of cheese, pepperoni, and sausage. On top, the chefs sprinkle a load of pepperoni, sausage, bacon, mozzarella, Parmesan, and tomato sauce. At 1,970, contains more calories than three McDonald’s quarter pounders with cheese.

Finally, Uno Pizzeria & Grill has a dessert dubbed the Ridiculously Awesome, Insanely Large Chocolate Cake. It clocks in at 1,740 calories with 168g of added sugar. Which, is the same as 42 teaspoons, or seven times the recommended daily limit.

CSPI senior nutritionist Lindsay Moyer slammed the dishes as ‘a nutritional nightmare’.

She added: ‘These meals are extreme, but even the typical dishes served at restaurants are a threat to Americans’ health because they increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and more.’

Furthermore, this is released just months after President Donald Trump opted to scrap rules that would have forced fast food diners to list calories on their menus, after seven years in Congress and following intense lobbying from restaurants including Domino’s Pizza.

Sarcastically, CSPI’s team of nutritionists wrote:

‘Who cares about the obesity and diabetes epidemics, as long as the cash keeps rolling into one of the nation’s premier purveyors of white flour and cheese?’

However, it is important to note that the list starts by outlining the daily nutritional allowance for healthy adults. We should have around 2,000 calories a day. With no more than 2,300mg of sodium (or, 1.25 teaspoons of salt). And, no more than six teaspoons of added sugar. Plus, no more than 20g of saturated fat.

Although, those guidelines seem to have little importance when it comes to meal combos in America’s most popular eateries.  Currently, obesity is a growing epidemic across the country. Nearly a third of American children are obese or overweight. These individuals are five times more likely to be obese as adults.
